Why Cherry Burton keeps coming up when people look for the best of East Yorkshire

Cherry Burton doesn’t announce itself. There’s no grand entrance, no landmark visible from the road that tells you something worth stopping for is here. It’s the kind of place you discover properly only once you start looking, and once you do, it has a habit of staying near the top of the list.

Four miles from Beverley, on the eastern edge of the Yorkshire Wolds, it offers something genuinely hard to find: village life that works as you want it to, without asking you to trade away the connections and conveniences that make daily life run smoothly.

This is what that looks like in practice.

The village itself

Cherry Burton sits around four miles north-west of Beverley, in a fold of the East Riding landscape that feels rural without tipping into being isolated.

The Bay Horse pub is a proper local, serving what it describes as “hearty pub grub with an Aussie twist”, which gives you a reasonable sense of the kind of place it is: unpretentious, characterful and worth a regular visit.

The village shop and post office keep daily life manageable without a car for the basics, and there’s a children’s play area, sports and recreation facilities and a village hall that hosts regular events and clubs throughout the year.

Together, these ingredients add up to the kind of village infrastructure that most new developments spend years trying to create and never quite achieve.

The schools

For families, school catchments are rarely the first thing discussed and almost always the thing that matters most in the long run.

Cherry Burton Primary School sits a short walk from the Maple Croft development on Canada Drive, providing a genuinely strong start for families with younger children.

At secondary level, Cherry Burton falls within the catchment for Longcroft School and Sixth Form College in Beverley, rated Good by Ofsted in its most recent inspection. Currently oversubscribed, its catchment has been tightening in recent years, which means being within it – as Cherry Burton residents are – carries even more weight than it once did.

Bishop Burton College

Just over two miles from the centre of the village – a seven minute drive or a pleasant cycle – sits Bishop Burton College, one of the UK’s leading land-based education providers.

The college offers further and higher education across agriculture, equine studies, animal management, engineering, sport and horticulture, on an extensive campus with equestrian facilities, sports amenities and conference venues. It’s one of the largest employers in the area, draws students from across Yorkshire and beyond and runs dedicated bus routes from Cherry Burton for students commuting to and from the college.

The Wolds Way

The Yorkshire Wolds have a quality that takes people by surprise when they first spend time in them. They’re not dramatic in the way the Dales or the Moors are, they’re quieter and gently rolling.

The Wolds Way National Trail runs 79 miles from Hessle on the Humber estuary to the clifftops at Filey on the North Yorkshire coast, passing through some of the most quietly beautiful countryside in England along the way. Cherry Burton sits close enough to the trail that accessing it is a straightforward part of daily or weekend life rather than an expedition.

The coast - closer than you think

The East Yorkshire coast is an often overlooked gem.

The dog-friendly beaches at Fraisthorpe and Wilsthorpe, just south of Bridlington, are among the most unspoiled stretches of shoreline on the Yorkshire coast – wide, open and largely free from the summer crowds that gather at more well-known seaside destinations. They’re the kind of beaches that feel accessible enough they become a habit: the place you go for an hour or two on a Sunday afternoon no matter the time of year or while-away an entire day in the lingering sunshine of summer.

From Cherry Burton, both are only 40 minutes by car.

The connections

Village life and easy commuting don’t often go together but Cherry Burton is the exception.

Beverley – with its Minster, independent shops, market, restaurants, Flemingate shopping, the East Riding Theatre and Beverley Racecourse – is around 10 minutes drive away. For getting there without a car, the 142 bus runs from stops on Main Street and Etton Road, taking around 8 to 10 minutes into Beverley Bus Station.

The A1079 puts York within about 45 minutes and links straight through to the M62 for Leeds, Manchester and beyond, while Beverley and Brough train stations – both a short drive from Maple Croft – run regular services to Hull, Sheffield, Scarborough and a direct line to London.

Humberside Airport is under 45 minutes away and access to everyday essentials like Castle Hill Hospital sit closer than most people expect from a village setting. It’s the kind of connectivity that means Cherry Burton works as well for someone commuting into the city as it does for someone who rarely needs to leave the village at all.

Hull city centre, the University of Hull and the wider cultural and commercial offer of East Yorkshire’s largest city is also under half an hour by car with train and bus links from Beverley.

Why this matters when you're choosing where to buy

The villages that tend to serve people best over the long term are the ones where the schools are strong, the community is genuine, the countryside is on the doorstep and the connections to everything else are straightforward. Cherry Burton ticks every one of those boxes and has done for a long time.

Which is, ultimately, why we chose it for Maple Croft.
