10 tips to help you prepare your home for winter

As the nights draw in you’ll want to feel cosy in your home, safe in the knowledge you’re all set for the colder months.

For many of our new Risby home owners, this will be the first winter in Shepherd’s Rest, our latest development in Beverley. And while the dark nights and dreary mornings aren’t always what we want at this time of year, our new home owners can close their doors safe in the knowledge their home is winter ready.

If you want to avoid any unexpected winter blues and head into spring with a smile, take a look at these 10 tips to help you prepare your home for winter.

Outside

  • Tidy up the garden, put away any stray toys or equipment and cover up your garden furniture so it’s clean and ready to use again next year. Don’t worry about getting the lawnmower out, keeping the grass longer will protect it from the elements.
  • Give the BBQ a thorough clean and if you’re keeping it outside, put a cover on it so it looks its best and lasts longer. Plus, you never know when you’ll fancy a mid-winter cook out so have it ready to go in case you want to grill some burgers in the snow.
  • Check security lights and locks on sheds and the garage so you can have peace of mind your valuables are safe and secure.
  • With winter comes wind! Avoid large items like trampolines, tables and fire pits flying away in windy weather by securing them to the ground or putting them out of the way of the wind. A flying trampoline can do a lot of damage so do the checks now before the wind really picks up.
  • While you’re in the garden, check for gutter clutter. Clear leaves and debris from gutters and drains to make sure rain water can wash away and you don’t have damaged gutters to replace at the end of the season.

Inside

  • Clear out old toys, clothes and any other stuff you don’t use to declutter in time for Christmas. Imagine how good it’ll feel to decorate for the festivities with a super tidy home? As you swap your summer clothes for winter ones, it’s a great time to recycle, donate or sell what you no longer use. The nearest clothing banks to Shepherd’s Rest are located at Morrisons in Beverley.
  • Make sure your boiler and heating is in order to keep you and your family warm while avoiding higher than necessary utility bills. All our homes feature hassle-free and efficient underfloor heating downstairs and correctly sized radiators upstairs to effectively heat every room. To keep your radiators working at their best, we recommend bleeding them twice a year.
  • Don’t forget to ventilate your home in winter months by opening the windows regularly. Just make sure your heating is turned off first so you’re not losing the warmth out the window.
  • Planning on lots of cooking this winter? Deep clean your oven to get it ready for all your winter warmers and festive feasts. Risby home owners love their NEFF kitchen appliances which come as standard in all our homes.
  • Fancy a change for the new season? Adding texture and alternative colours to a bedspread or sofa cushions can instantly change the feeling in a room. Visit our show home at Shepherd’s Rest to get inspired.

Don’t let the winter blues get in your way. Keeping on top of jobs in and around your home can save you time, money and a lot of hassle. All our homes are designed to keep maintenance to a minimum so you can spend more time enjoying your home rather than having to look after it.
